Together with Westberg White Architecture, BOG Constructions is breathing new life into the outdated and undersized Kinesiology Labs and Aquatic Center on the Liberal Arts Campus on Long Beach City College. This major redesign encompasses multiple 1 to 2-story buildings totaling 32,000 SF which house athletic and aquatic facilities, a locker room, a multi-purpose room, pool equipment, restrooms, storage, and offices, as well as a 27-lane Olympic size swimming pool.
Structural systems include the use of special reinforced CMU shear walls as well as steel special moment frames as the lateral system. Roof framing consists of composite and bare metal deck over steel wide flange beams or trusses spanning to columns or CMU bearing wall.
Additionally, the project includes a 30-foot-tall freestanding concrete wall to minimize sound impact from an adjacent major street. The wall sits on concrete pile foundations to handle the significant vertical and lateral loads, and to avoid surcharging the nearby pool.
The Kinesiology Lab and Aquatic Center is currently in design and has been submitted to DSA for plan review. The project is anticipated to start construction in late 2019.
